HONG KONG — OnlyFans is now accessible in China after previously being blocked by government censors.
According to GreatFire.org, which monitors internet freedom in China, OnlyFans was quietly unblocked on Nov. 29, despite the fact that pornography remains illegal in the country and the government has a zero-tolerance policy toward sexually explicit content.
The site has previously been available intermittently in China, but typically only for short periods at a time rather than a full week. It is unclear whether Beijing's decision to unblock OnlyFans is temporary or permanent.
CNN reports that users posting on the Chinese social media platform Weibo wondered if the move was intended to address the high unemployment rate among Chinese youth, who could launch their own accounts in large numbers.
Due to China's strict pornography laws, those accounts could wind up being more music, comedy, or fitness-oriented. However, the change should benefit all OnlyFans creators, as the site's potential audience just grew exponentially.
