FORT WORTH, Texas — American Airlines abruptly reversed its policy Tuesday on filtering web content provided by its Gogo in-flight Internet access. The airline began a six-month trial of the service on some of its 767 planes.
American has stated that it has not received any reports of "inappropriate content" being viewed among its passengers, but that the filtering was "an appropriate measure to take."
Initial resistance to open web access was voiced by the airline's flight attendants union. Some catholic groups have joined the call for restricted online viewing.
As previously reported in XBIZ, Delta Air Lines plans to roll out its Internet access system-wide in 2009, and said it will filter its content.
Aircell, the operator behind the Gogo service, will work with American to establish the parameters of web filtering.
