There have been many attempts to bring the ancient Indian Kama Sutra sex manual to the screen, but this may be the best — a detailed visual glossary of the fine art of intercourse. Scenes are short, just enough to give a good idea of what’s involved in each position. Each is beautifully shot and fully performed by five fine-looking couples — there’s no softcore fudging. Sexologist Dr. Kat Van Kirk describes the finer points as we see them in action.

The names are colorful and strange: The Goat and the Tree, Splitting the Bamboo, Huge Bird Above a Dark Sea, Monkey Clasp, Tail of the Ostrich. Some are all too familiar to porn viewers, like The Sixth Posture, aka Doggie-Style, and The First Posture, better known as Missionary (“There’s a reason it’s stood the test of time,” says Dr. Kat).

Others have rarely, or never, been seen in porn, mostly because they afford only limited camera access — like Butterflies in Flight, with the woman lying flat on top of the man. There are 25 in all. Special mention should be made of the soundtrack, which blends exotic Indian-type vocals with percussive electronics. A CD is included in the package. There’s also a handsome booklet, with each position illustrated.
