Seattle Hosts Hardcore Amateur Film Festival

SEATTLE — Several hundred amateur filmmakers in Seattle recently protested the Bush Administration’s assault on adult entertainment by holding their own hardcore film festival.

The event, dubbed Hump!, took place over four screenings at the Northwest Film Forum. Forty-three first-time pornographers submitted homemade entries, ranging from hardcore BDSM to a stop-motion short featuring a cupcake making love to a cookie.

Dan Savage, one of Hump!’s organizers said the idea was partly good fun, partly “a slap at the American Taliban.”

“The anti-sex, anti-choice, anti-gay, anti-Darwin, anti-porn shock troops of the religious right have been on the attack since November,” Savage said. “But here in Seattle, more than 200 people — directors, cast members, crew — pushed back, asserting their fundamental right to enjoy themselves and their bodies however they see fit.”

Awards were given to the top three films based on viewer voting.

The second runner-up was “Old School,” which Savage described as a modern take on “classical stag.” First runner-up honors went to “Bo Logan’s Jack-Off Extravaganza,” which probably requires little explanation.

The grand prize — a trip for two to Las Vegas and a trophy called the Lubey — went to “Don’t Stop Believing,” which Savage said was an erotic thriller about earthquake preparedness.

“You had to be there,” he added.

Savage said Hump! was a resounding success, with demand for tickets far exceeding the number of seats available. He added that organizers already are planning a 2006 event.

Original copies of all the films shown at Hump! were returned to the filmmakers after the screenings, ensuring there is no chance any of the entries will be used in a way the filmmakers didn’t intend, such as ending up on the Internet.
