After being admitted to a hospital in Taylors, S.C., on Nov. 6, doctors performed an X-ray on her chest. The X-ray revealed the collapsed lung, which doctors drained and reinflated with a chest tube.
Karone said that it didn't take her long to realize that something was seriously wrong with her before she went to the hospital.
"I instantly knew what happened, but I figured that [my lung] would reinflate itself like the last time in a few hours, but it didn’t," she said. "Four days later, my chest was hurting, and I was having trouble breathing, so I decided to get things checked out. Next thing I know, the doctor is telling me get to the emergency room as soon as I can. Next thing I know they’re prepping me for surgery."
Karone was released on Nov. 11. She has since been resting at her home. She added that she had suffered from a collapsed lunch once before, back in 2006. The condition, known as spontaneous pneumothorax, typically affects tall, thin men, she said.
"The doctors don’t know why it keeps happening," she said. "They thought it was a one-time thing. The condition doesn’t even happen to women."
