New XXX Online Encyclopedia Launches

SAN DIEGO — A new online encyclopedia based on the powerful MediaWiki platform has launched: Carnalpedia.org.

MediaWiki is the free, open-source software that powers hundreds of online encyclopedias, including leading online knowledge base Wikipedia.

Carnalpedia.org offers information on straight and gay porn, including profiles of stars and copious links to existing titles that include "buy now" links to online stores.

Creator Jeremy Haddock said that Wikipedia's policy of censorship spurred him to start Carnalpedia.org.

"The fact that Wikipedia has a certain type of audience leaves a lot of information about sex and the adult industry either blocked or censored," he said. "Having a wiki geared exclusively for the topic of sex, as well as having all the articles using the Restricted to Adults website labels, allows us a lot of latitude in what we can provide."

Haddock's claims about Wikipedia hold some water — Wikipedia doesn't host pornographic images, for example — but a simple search for "Jenna Jameson" returns a 5,000-word biography on the adult star that includes 136 references. By contrast, Carnalpedia.com's entry on Jenna Jameson currently only runs about 125 words.

But the site is already home to more than 120,000 articles. Haddock added that he will seek to restrict editing of his site only to select, authorized few. The site is also marked with the Restricted to Adults label promoted by the anti-child-porn advocacy organization ASACP.
