Multitouch Mobile Flash to Be Available Early 2010

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Adobe’s chief technology officer told analysts Tuesday that following a beta-launch of Flash on mobile phones by the end of this year, the software will boast multitouch and accelerometer features.

James Governor of the Redmonk analyst firm first reported the news from Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch via Twitter, with a tweet that said “beta for mobile Flash, unmodified, by end of ‘09. For embedding in early '10 multitouch, accelerometer.”

Governor said that Adobe, one of Redmonk’s clients, is taking a cue from Apple and incorporating elements to enhance the user experience.

“Adobe has understood this and will be offering APIs accordingly,” Governor said. “What's most important is that they support a new interaction model because that's what developers want. Augmented reality apps, being more gestural about how you interact with applications — that's a big deal.”

The multitouch function, which was introduced on Apple’s iPhone, allows users to control zooming with two or more fingers on the screen by pinching and stretching gestures on the screen. The accelerator component measures tilt and motion and detects rotation to change user orientation from portrait to landscape and vice-versa.

Flash apps also will utilize GPS technology.

While there’s no immediate plans to offer mobile features via the Flash developer tool Flash Builder, Governor called it the next logical step.

"There's all these really cool phones beyond the iPhone, like Nokia phones, that have APIs for things like accelerometers, but the functionality hasn't been taken advantage of," Governer said. "If Adobe can simplify access to this functionality for new interaction models then it can, through tools, democratize sophisticated development on these platforms."

According to reports, all the mobile Flash demonstrations took place on Android devices. As far as its availability on the iPhone — “It’s up to Apple,” the company said.
