Fraudulent Letter Slams Maverick Entertainment

LOS ANGELES – A letter pretending to originate from the Los Angeles City Attorney's office has been circulating among a group of adult film distributors claiming that content generated from Maverick Entertainment Corp. used underage performers, or in the words of the letter, “Minor-aged children.”

According to Maverick’s attorney, Stanley Stone, the letter states that City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo is prosecuting Maverick for violations of penal code section 666.7, which is a list of felony sentence enhancements. However, the letter is a fake, according to Stone, and has been determined as such by Delgadillo’s office, which says there is no investigation whatsoever into Maverick and its business dealings.

Among the many suspect elements of letter, it instructs recipients to terminate business dealings with Maverick and destroy all inventory generated from the Maverick library.

Stone, who became aware of the letter on Nov. 1, added that the letter has legitimate-seeming letterhead and overall presentation, although upon closer inspection, it is heavily flawed and poorly written. Other tip-offs that the letter is bogus include the fact that the postmark on the envelope is from Santa Clarita, Calif., as opposed to Los Angeles where the City Attorney’s office resides.

“First of all, the City Attorney would never send out a letter like that – not ever,” Stone told XBiz, adding that he himself used to be an attorney for the City of Los Angeles. “It was written by someone who went to school on Mars. It’s a stupid letter that makes no sense and clearly someone is looking to hurt Maverick."

Stone believes the letter was generated from a Maverick competitor, although he preferred not to speculate.

So far the letter has been received by five adult film distributors.

“Whoever it was that sent this, they went to a lot of trouble, that’s for sure,” said attorney Jeffrey Douglas, who has two clients who received the letter. “In doing so, the person has committed a series of crimes, including mail fraud, impersonation of a city official, and they have made a victim of Maverick.”

Douglas fears that the first five letters could possibly signal a larger letter-writing campaign by the mystery sender.

“Realistically, when people hear of a child porn allegation, it’s one of those things that is hard to shake,” Douglas said. “It’s a vicious thing to do, and someone went to a lot of trouble to do it.”

A sample of the letter has been handed over to authorities and is currently under investigation.
