Porn, Health Advocates Discuss Mandating Condoms on Sets

OAKLAND, Calif. — Various porn industry representatives and public health advocates gathered for the fourth Cal/OSHA meeting to discuss strengthening current state health regulations to better address the adult industry.

More specifically, the meeting, which was planned before the recent HIV case was diagnosed, focused on determining whether a regulation requiring condoms on porn sets is necessary.

The meeting was held to get public input about worker risks and the status of existing law.

Current regulations regarding bloodborne pathogens applies across all industries including health care workers and requires employers take “barrier protection” measures to protect workers.

Cal/OSHA chief Len Welsh told attendees that the existing law takes longer to resolve in cases in which employers appeal than a direct regulation requiring condom use in filming would.

"It’s much simpler,” Welsh said. “You either did or you didn’t.”

While discussion indicated consensus was remote if even achievable, he promised those gathered that “everyone who participates will have been heard.”
