Indonesian Pop Star Gets Prison Term for Porn Tapes

JAKARTA — An Indonesian pop star was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison and a $28,000 fine for making amateur sex tapes.

Nazril Irham, the 29-year old lead singer of popular band Peterpan, whose known by his fans as “Ariel,” sparked a storm of moral controversy in the Muslim-majority country when two home-made videos — one of which showed him and his former actress girlfriend — were leaked on the Internet.

A court rejected the argument that Irham’s videos were stolen and released without his permission.

The prosecutors said that he hadn't done enough to stop the distribution violating the strict anti-porn law that’s been on the books for the last three years.

Despite the jail time, hundreds of conservative anti-porn and human-rights activists protested outside of the court claiming the sentence wasn’t tough enough.

"The whole legal process began with public pressure in the name of religion and morality," said Hendardi, chairman of human rights organization, the Setara Institute.

He added, "The legal system bowed to public pressure, even though the public opinion it was respinding to does not really respresent the majority."

Irham’s lawyers said they will appeal the ruling.
