Study Finds Male, Female Views on Pornography Differ

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Men and women differ in their views about the effects and possible regulation of pornography — in just the way you might expect, according to survey findings recently released by Harris Interactive Inc., an international market research firm.

The poll, conducted in September 2004, revealed women to be much more critical of pornography, in general, than men. The poll also revealed that a slightly larger number of women over men favor government regulation of online pornography, if such action were possible.

Specifically, 57 percent of women believe "pornography is demeaning towards women," as compared to 38 percent of men.

Additionally, 47 percent of women and 33 percent of men believe porn "harms relationships between men and women."

The poll also concluded that the majority of men and women agree the effects of pornography on children are mostly negative, though there was no unanimity regarding question. However, 2 percent of men and women polled said adult content “helps kids better understand sexuality."

The poll also found that men and women share a similar view regarding the regulation of Internet pornography for the sake of children, though an obvious difference among the sexes still arose during the course of the survey.

Forty-two percent of those polled — 53 percent of women and 30 percent of men — said they believed the government should "regulate Internet pornography specifically so that children cannot access X-rated material online."
