HONG KONG — Chinese porn film, "3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy" has topped the Hong Kong box office raking in $6.3 million since its release in April.
AsiaOne reported that the film has pulled ahead of all other Chinese movies currently playing in Hong Kong with A-list stars beating out "I Love Hong Kong" at number two and " Shaolin" which stars Jackie Chan.
The film was recently purchased for distribution in North America and plans are to bring it to the U.S. by China Lion Film Distribution, although a date has not yet been confirmed.
China Lion's CEO Milt Barlow said in May, "We're looking at as wide as possible a release for this groundbreaking film in North America and are currently working with our theatrical partners AMC for the U.S. and Toronto, Cineplex for Vancouver and Consolidated in Hawaii. Announcements are expected in the next few weeks."
“3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy” earned $351,000 on the first day it was released in China and sold out in theaters in its first week.
The movie is a retelling of a 1991 Chinese movie, "Sex and Zen" and is based on the classic erotic text, "The Carnal Prayer Mat." The new take centers around a young man who is taught the erotic arts by a local lord's harem.
