Google Dives Deeper Into Web Hosting Business

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — The popularity of Google products just won’t stop — but the search engine’s new Page Creator did.

Luckily, for Googlephiles, it’s now back online. Google officials say that so many people signed up for the personalized web page creator Thursday, that its system crashed.

“Extremely strong demand," the company said in a statement, noting that the company simply ran out of capacity.

(It should be noted that Google Reader and Google Analytics also went down on their first days.)

Google's new service promises easy-to-create web pages that are stored on Google's servers. Each web page has an address that begins with the user's Google account name followed by “.GooglePages.com.”

Page Creator competes with many other web hosting services, most notably Google rival Microsoft’s Live.com project, which has nearly 100,000 users.

Google also has a similar “publish-your-own” program with Blogger.com.
