“I’ve seen some of the footage, and the quality is top notch,” Juicy owner Jerry E. said. “It’s so clear you can see goose pimples on the girls’ butts — and in this case, you want to see them. Customers will be very happy with this line.”
Lurid’s first releases under the deal will be “I Love My Pussy Vol. 1” and Skeeter Kerkove’s “Anal Renegades,” both due in April. The company will release 2-4 titles per month.
Lurid owner Guynu Phamstein told XBiz that the company could have started releasing DVDs several months ago, but had the luxury of waiting to find a distributor who understands the potential for hi-def product and can reach the markets Lurid is targeting — including more affluent consumers who have hi-def TVs, plasmas and LCDs.
“We had been looking for a distributor out there that really sees the future and is ready to embrace it,” Phamstein said. “Most aren’t looking at hi-def the way we are. A lot of big players are still skeptical that this is where the industry is heading. When I talked with Jerry and Marty [Turkel, Juicy sales director], they were forward thinking and creative. It fit like a glove.”
Lurid has been filming for almost a year and a half, but Phamstein said the process of setting up an operation that is capable of delivering 100 percent hi-def — which requires specialized software, editing bays and personnel — was labor intensive; and with no real blueprint to work from, he and his team have had to find their way based on trial and error.
He said all the upfront work has resulted in a process that will enable the company to produce true hi-def gonzo for roughly the same cost of producing standard gonzo, adding that it puts Lurid in an enviable position as the market for hi-def porn grows.
“We’re set up as a full-service production house,” Phamstein said. “We have the equipment and the staff to do everything, from preproduction to postproduction. We’ve spent tons of money on the software and tons of time testing different approaches to find what’s right, what’s wrong and what works best. We have it to a point now where we can deliver it quickly and at a wholesale price that’s in line with standard delivery.”
Anyone with a Windows PC can watch Lurid’s hi-def WMV-HD movies. Watching the movies on a TV is a bit more complicated and requires several pieces of equipment to achieve true hi-def, including a high-def monitor, Windows Media Center PC and Media Center Extender or comparable equipment such as Microsoft’s Xbox.
Phamstein said he realizes not everyone has this equipment, so to open Lurid’s content to the widest possible audience, the company is packaging its titles as two-disc sets, the second disc being a standard-definition version of the movie, all for the same wholesale price, he said, as most standard gonzo on the market.
Samples of Lurid’s hi-def content are available on the company’s LuridEntertainment.com.
