KUWAIT CITY — RIM, the Toronto-based maker of BlackBerry smartphones, has reached an agreement with the Kuwaiti communication ministry to block porn sites from its devices by the end of the year.
News of the block was initially reported by the al-Jarida newspaper and later by Reporters Without Borders, which warns that nonporn websites could be blocked as a result of “overblocking.”
Reporters Without Borders has called on the Ministry of Communication to rescind the measure, which has been worked on for about a year.
Kuwait is an Arab state located in the north-east of the Arabian Peninsula in Western Asia, bordered by Saudi Arabia to the south at Khafji and Iraq to the north at Basra.
XBIZ calls to RIM on the Kuwaiti porn block went unreturned Tuesday.
