LOS ANGELES — Smash Pictures is literally taking its promotion of its hot-selling parody of "Fifty Shades of Grey" to the streets, purchasing a giant billboard on Interstate 91 South in Hartford, Conn., that touts the new title.
Smash Pictures owner Dan Quinn, who also owns a chain of adult stores on the East Coast, bought the billboard to send drivers to his Luv Boutique store. An image of masked star Allie Haze from the box cover of "Fifty Shades" is prominently featured on the billboard.
This marks the first time Quinn has ever promoted a Smash movie on one of his billboards.
"With the success we’re having on this parody release, he took it to the next level in promoting our XXX film," said Stuart Wall, vice president of Smash Pictures. "In Hollywood, Calif., you hear about these type of billboards unable to stay up longer then a day on Sunset Blvd. We’re happy to see this up in his hometown of Hartford, Conn. ... What’s cool about this is it’s viewable by anybody heading to work each morning or driving home."
Smash's parody, directed by Jim Powers, stars Haze and Ryan Driller in the lead roles and is available now.
