HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. — Sportsheets has been named one of the Fastest Growing Private Companies in 2013 by the Orange County Business Journal, which has honored the family-owned manufacturer with the title two years in a row.
The Orange County Business Journal annually compiles and prints a list of the companies whose business practices, growth and professionalism have left a lasting impression on the local community; and, according to the paper, Sportsheets has maintained steady growth in operations since its launch in 1993.
“More than two-thirds of our 350 products are made in the USA and we employ more than 60 local contractors and employees — we create and maintain jobs for our community and beyond,” Sportsheets President Julie Stewart said.
“Sportsheets has experienced exponential growth in the almost two decades in which we’ve been in business, especially since the debut of the award-winning Sex & Mischief collection just two years ago,” Sportsheets Founder and CEO Tom Stewart said.
“This is truly exciting news and an excellent opportunity to show the mainstream business world that the adult industry features some seriously strong and successful companies,” he added.
Inspired by a comedy bit on the "Late Show with David Letterman" in which Letterman donned a Velcro suit, jumped onto a Velcro wall and stuck to it, Tom Stewart decided to create a product that would make it fun and easy for couples to tie each other up in the bedroom without worrying about knots and rope. Tom Stewart learned to sew and, with the help of his brother Bob, created the first Sportsheets bondage bed sheet.
Later, the Stewart brothers’ sister and father joined the team and helped build the business. Sportsheets International currently owns a 17,000-square-foot warehouse and office in the heart of Huntington Beach.
