The study, which was conducted by Juniper Research Director Bruce Gibson, paints a picture of diverging mediums, with text-based content forecasted to peak at $303 million by 2007 while video reaches new heights.
The study predicts mobile adult video content will reach $1.7 billion in 2009 and grow to $2.4 billion by 2011.
Text-based content currently accounts for 20 percent of the total mobile adult content market, Gibson said, adding that 50 percent of the global market is dedicated to video. According to Gibson, Juniper expects to see the video market share increase to 70 percent by 2011.
“As with mobile games and mobile gambling, the mobile channel will not just be another delivery channel for existing content,” Gibson said. “It will in fact be a different way of presenting adult content. The mobile channel will reach new audiences who will use the products in a different way to their use of print products, DVDs and the Internet. Because mobile is about fun and instant gratification, products will need to be designed to provide just that.”
While Gibson sees a world of growth potential in the mobile adult arena, he is quick to point out that the medium has unique obstacles to growth.
“There are many regulatory and public sensibility issues associated with mobile adult content and these will constrain market growth,” Gibson said. “However, the inherent strengths of the mobile as a flexible device, coupled with advances in mobile video capability and the implementation of robust age verification procedures, will ensure that the mobile channel has an important role to play in the future of the adult content industry.”
