The store, “Pleasure Chest,” received permission from the board to open its doors, but that decision is being appealed by neighbors who claim a retail permit should not have been granted to an establishment selling adult merchandise. However, store owner Brian Robinson pointed out to CBS News that his establishment does not feature private viewing booths or peep shows and that children are not allowed inside.
“A person has the right to pursuit of happiness and sexuality,” he said, “and self-awareness is part of that right.”
At last Friday’s hearing, several residents claimed there were changes in the neighborhood caused by the store’s arrival. The Zoning Board offered no timeline for its decision on the case.
Prior to its move, “Pleasure Chest” operated for decades in another Chicago neighborhood. Last June, Alderman Ted Matlak decided there were no legal grounds to prevent the store from operating in its new venue.
