Although she finished in tenth place in the 2003 recall election, Carey did not obtain enough signatures for her name to appear on the ballot this year. Carey was running as an Independent write-in candidate.
Under California law, a candidate for governor needs 164,000 signatures to qualify as an independent candidate on the ballot.
Carey withdrew because her mentally handicapped mother, Jaqueline Cook, jumped off the roof of a four-story building in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Sept. 13. Carey said it was a suicide attempt and that she remains in critical condition.
After traveling back and forth from Florida to California, Carey decided to remain at her mother’s side for an upcoming surgery.
“As much as I want to help the state of California be a better place, I think it is more important to be with my mom and help her,” Carey said. “I am only 26 and have many more years to be involved in politics, but right now I must be in Florida with my mom. For now I would just like to ask everyone to pray for [her] healthy recovery.”
Carey is under exclusive contract with Legend. Her last video was Cash Markman’s “Cash & Carey.”
