Number of Internet Users in China Rises 30%

BEIJING — Count on more traffic to China.

On Friday, the state’s news agency said that China's population of Internet users has risen by 30 percent over the past year to 132 million.

The figure was up from 123 million at the end of June citing the government's China Internet Network Information Center. The Xinhua News Agency said the number of Chinese surfers with broadband access has grown to 52 million.

China, however, jails individuals for posting porn, political essays or anything deemed subversive online. But that doesn’t include traffic going straight to China from other countries.

Last summer, adult webmaster Chen Hui was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison for operating PornographicSummer.com. Hui also was fined $12,500.

Hui ran four adult paysites, which reportedly garnered more than 600,000 paying members at up to $33 per signup. PornographicSummer.com, also known as Qingseliuyuetian, was considered one of the largest Chinese adult websites in existence. VIP members are believed to have paid $500 for full access to the site.
