Adult Retailer PlayBlue Won’t Open Dublin Store

DUBLIN, Ireland — The owner of PlayBlue, which operates online adult retailer PlayBlue.ie and a brick-and-mortar store in the Irish city of Kilkenny, has decided not to proceed with opening a store in Dublin following protests from the local community.

PlayBlue’s Richard Cullen said he made the decision to not open the store after hearing protests from local residents and nearby retailers that said the adult store was in the wrong location — across the street from St. Patrick's Boys Primary School and in a residential area. It was to be PlayBlue’s second physical location.

About 50 gathered outside where they were accompanied by local politicians outside the store, which was nearing its grand opening this week.

Cullen said: "After seeing so many people unhappy and after talking with my partner we have decided not to go ahead with the opening. At the end of the day we are not in the business of annoying people. We are now looking for somewhere else."

Cullen started up PlayBlue.ie in 2000 and expanded operations in 2013 to include a brick-and-mortar store in Kilkenny, Ireland, about one hour away from Dublin.

PlayBlue’s online and Kilkenny store stock a wide range of adult products with more than 3,000 different lines and a comprehensive selection of adult DVDs.
