SAN FRANCISCO — Magnus Sullivan, editor of BetterThanTheHand.com and co-owner of ManShop.com, has released a new book on the social stigma of male masturbation — “Better Than the Hand: How Masturbation Is the Key to Better Sex & Healthier Living.”
In the book, Sullivan sets out to offer fresh dialogue intended to shift the way society thinks about male masturbation.
Sullivan, in his intro, wrote that he could never imagined he would write about masturbation, let alone masturbation with sex toys or how masturbation with toys could be a catalyst for change.
“If my mother could only see me now,” Sullivan wrote. “When I tell people that I’m writing about male masturbation with toys, they often pause, as if to say, ‘seriously?’ And then they smile and laugh.
“For a topic that’s generally dismissed as too trivial for serious consideration, it’s easy to forget that the mere mention of masturbation as a healthy practice abruptly ended the career of a recent surgeon general.”
Sullivan noted that “Better Than the Hand” discusses how men, straight and gay, can achieve multiple orgasms, remain hard between orgasms, recover quickly between orgasms, become a more patient and creative lover and master techniques for anal sex
In the book, Sullivan addresses three issues in the book associated with masturbation and toys:
- Why something so simple is little-understood and difficult to discuss;
- Specific masturbation tips and techniques that enhance solo sex and change lives; and,
- How to extend this practice to create healthy relationships with ourselves and others.
Some of the chapters in the book are titled, “Shame and Fear Block Imagination, Pleasure and Personal Growth,” “Why Are Some Women Threatened by Male Masturbation?” and “Is Masturbation the Key to World Peace?”
Sullivan has been at the forefront of adult entertainment and related distribution for more than 20 years. In 1993, Sullivan founded eLine, which provides services for GameLink. One of his first clients was adult toy retailer Good Vibrations
Sullivan later created two acclaimed movies about open marriages and their challenges and opportunities — “An Open Invitation” and “Marriage 2.0.”
Last year, Sullivan launched ManShop.com, a seller of sex toys for men, and started publishing BetterThanTheHand.com, a blog that gives visitors reviews of the latest sex toys and sexuality products in the context of a frank discussion about the overall benefits of sexuality products.
“Better Than the Hand: How Masturbation Is the Key to Better Sex & Healthier Living” is available in hardcover book or via Kindle at ManShop.com.
