Sechrest told XBIZ that he had seen an ad online seeking a local Madonna fan with a sense of humor to be featured in the special commentary section of the DVD. The company also was looking for someone willing to "do it for cheap," and Sechrest said he was the man for the job.
No one even remotely involved in the movie wanted anything to do with this special edition re-release," Sechrest said, "so here I am. Really, if someone gives me 25 bucks and a cracker, and it's anywhere near remotely mainstream, I'll do it."
Sechrest said the studio knew there were enough Madonna fans out there to make money off of a "Shanghai Surprise" re-release. Featuring a gay comic on the DVD who would gush over Madonna one minute and cattily comment each time she looked bad the next would add a special selling point.
"You know, us gays are really entertaining," Sechrest said.
