Police made this announcement after 10 mobile dealers were caught selling memory chips containing pornographic images. The police report said that each ship was capable of holding a 60-minute film.
According to the Xinhua News Agency, transmitting porn on a mobile device can land the offender in detention for two weeks with a fine of up to $400; merchants selling the content may face up to three years in jail.
International research firm Research and Markets reports that China was the world's largest mobile phone manufacturing base in 2006, producing about 47 percent of the world's cellphones that year and selling approximately 103 million mobile phones in the country's domestic market.
