RAPID CITY, S.D. — After months of litigation, the owner of Sturgis, S.D.’s Dick & Jane's Naughty Spot recently opened its second store — Dick & Jane's Super Spot in Rapid City, S.D.
Dick & Jane's Super Spot in Rapid City is a much bigger adult store — about four times — than its Dick & Jane's Naughty Spot location. The new Rapid City store opened on Valentine’s Day.
David Eliason, owner of Dick & Jane's, told local media that in "Sturgis we are restricted to 1,100 square feet, [but] here in Rapid City were at 4,000 square feet.”
“There is … a much larger selection here, much better selection of lingerie … a much-better selection of everything,” he said.
Dick & Jane's was dealt a setback to open the new store after it was denied a business permit by city council after given initial approval.
A nearby taekwondo studio objected to the sexually oriented store because a city ordinance bars such businesses from being within 1,000 feet of any “educational facility.”
But Eliason got a break after a judge sided with him and said his constitutional rights were deprived when the city wouldn’t grant a permit.
"Because the definition of 'educational facility' was written so broadly, it led to councilmembers applying their personal moral views instead of the ordinance's terms," a federal judge wrote.
The new Rapid City store, located at 1141 Deadwood Ave., No. 9, offers adult movies, sex toys and novelties, lingerie, massage lotions and oils. It is open seven days a week, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.
