NEW YORK — HBO yesterday released a trailer for the second season of “The Deuce,” the semifictional drama that follows the story of the rise of the porn biz in New York’s Times Square from the early 1970s through the mid-1980s.
Now back for a second season, “The Deuce” tells of the germination of the industry and the shift from organized crime-backed parlors to a legitimate, culturally accepted enterprise. The first season covered the years 1971 and 1972.
The upcoming second season starts in 1977, featuring the same characters and same locations, when porn was entering its golden years.
In the “The Deuce,” actor James Franco plays twin brothers Vincent and Frankie Martino who become fronts for the mob while operating out of Times Square. Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal plays sex worker Candy who gravitates toward porn.
Franco has produced other movies documenting the adult entertainment profession. His Rabbit Bandini Productions company produced “Kink,” the documentary about Kink.com that debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in 2013.
Franco also starred in “King Cobra,” the 2016 drama that documents the murder of gay porn producer Bryan Kocis in 2007.
The second season of “The Deuce” begins Sept. 9. The trailer can be seen here.
