Retailers Target Specific Markets at Erotica LA

LOS ANGELES — With a record attendance, this year's Erotica L.A. convention attracted a wide range of adult-entertainment fans — from diehard porn watchers to erotica-curious couples — and retailers such as Pjur lubricants and high-end toy manufacturer Lelo set up shop to represent the couples- and gay-friendly sides of the industry.

The Lelo table sat near Erotica's entrance, where its display of glossy bean-shaped bullets, silicone wands and new G-spot vibes attracted a different kind of adult consumer. The table was surrounded by couples of all ages, interested to see what made Lelo's products stand out from the booths crowded full of plastic novelties.

A Lelo spokesman told XBIZ that though the company's products are not for everyone — its vibes start at $89 — he said his table was attracting a specific clientele interested only in purchasing high-end luxury sex toys. Lelo's bean-shaped Yva vibrator is available in both stainless steel and 18-karat gold plate, and both were on sale at the booth.

Tonja McDonald, marketing and sales representative for Pjur personal products, unveiled several new products at Erotica and told XBIZ about the company's newest anal comfort spray, a product manufactured in response to the recent European outlawing of Lidocaine, commonly used in sexual comfort and stamina products. McDonald said the company created its anal spray as a safer, non-numbing alternative to those needing a little help with their anal play.

Pjur also recently released travel-sized packs of premoistened antibacterial wipes, which can be used for after-sex or toy cleanup on the go.

Mae Schultz, marketing coordinator for sex-positive retailer Babeland , told XBIZ that she was educating customers as much as she was selling them products, and that her booth, located in the heart of Erotica's retail section, was frequented both by customer regulars and sex toy novices.

Though Babeland's tables were stocked with classic toys like the Hitachi wand and the Rabbit Habit, Schultz said she found customers were curious to check out the G-spot hugging Snugglepuss, and men and women alike were buying the company's bestselling anal stimulator, the Aneros.

New company Flurtz Chocolate made its official launch at Erotica, and its booth attracted couples and groups of women with its promise of sexual-enhancement chocolates. Company sales representative Julia Golding told XBIZ that Flurtz chocolates are made with a special combination of Chinese herbs, which when consumed with a room-temperature glass of wine or grape juice, increase blood flow to the pelvic region.

The sensation can last up to 12 hours, Golding said, and heightens sensitivity and sexual desire.
