LOS ANGELES — Last night, BDSM powerhouse Kink.com hosted an exclusive screening of their latest feature, John Paul the Pope’s “Derelict,” starring Casey Calvert and Charlotte Sartre, at an artsy warehouse space in an appropriately industrial area of downtown Los Angeles.
The studio unveiled an R-Rated version of John Paul the Pope’s slasher porn movie, timed for a Halloween-season release, to a selected audience of cast members, industry professionals and the trade press.
A Q&A with the director, Calvert and Sartre followed the screening.
Shot in an abandoned gold mine in a remote desert location, “Derelict” will remind viewers of a Kink.com take on a lineage of gory horror. It is an on-brand take on 1970s classics like “Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” “Last House on the Left and “The Hills Have Eyes" or to the “young women in peril” surreal dreams of Jean Rollin and the relentless sadism of 2000s French horror.
And although nobody in the creative team was familiar with the cult videos starring Misty Mundae in the late 1990s-early 2000s, the low-budget thrills and genuine erotic charge of the performances made "Derelict" a matchless, if unwitting, homage to those pre-internet-porn skinfests.
In fact, Calvert and Sartre are note-perfect for the parts of two road-tripping lovers who encounter a masked sadist, played by John Paul the Pope. Pope’s very much human monster wears a mask designed by none other than alt-porn’s top male talent, Owen Grey, who’s also a noted visual artist. The leathery mask was on display at the screening.
The movie even presents an unlikely motivation for the Monster’s precarious state of mind, with dreamy flashbacks starring the always radiant Avi Love in a non-sex role. And there is a twist ending, which will especially delight the many fans of co-star "Goth Charlotte" Sartre.
“Derelict” is now available on DVD and on Kink.com.
