BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Red Canary Song, a grassroots organization providing resources and advocating for Asian migrant sex workers, has collaborated with Kink Out to produce Red Canary SCREAM, a fundraiser event benefiting Red Canary Song, set for this Saturday from 2 to 8 p.m. (EDT).
Hosted by Drag King Wang Newton, the event is being touted as a "historic gathering of the Asian American underground," including the queer, burlesque, drag, fetish, tattoo and circus communities, as they unite for an "extravaganza of entertainment and eroticism."
As per a company spokesperson, the afternoon will include a full program of events, ranging from burlesque performances by Calamity Chang and Kitana Louise to kink experiences with Mistress Lucy Sweetkill and Domina Dia Dynasty, tattoo sessions with Ariel W. and Simon Ban, and drag by Emi Grate and Demon Daddy, to name a few.
The event will also include a silent auction with tattoo, photo and sexuality coaching sessions up for bid, and a vendor market with prints, merchandise and event-themed embroidery available for purchase.
Ron Kim and Yuh-Line Niou of the New York State Assembly will be in attendance, speaking on their work and support of Red Canary Song and decriminalization of sex work.
Red Canary Song was first formed in response to the death of Yang Song, an Asian migrant sex worker, during a police raid at a Flushing, Queens massage parlor in 2017. It is backed by Asian American Sex Workers and Allies and has been recognized and awarded for service to the Asian community by Queens Assemblyperson, Ron Kim, and Chinatown Assemblyperson, Yuh-line Niou. Red Canary Song is working closely with DecrimNY.org to ensure that the most marginalized sex workers are protected in future decriminazation policies.
Organizers elaborated on the event, calling it "both a protest and a celebration on a multitude of levels."
"Asian sexuality is often co-opted and exoticized by those who are not of Asian heritage," a spokesperson said. "Asian-American performers who craft their work on body, identity and erotic agency are unifying to champion rights and protections for the most marginalized and silenced within our communities."
