LAS VEGAS — Lance Hart is inviting companies to co-sponsor a self-defense class for sex workers he will lead at January’s XBIZ 2020 trade show.
The class is titled “How to Use Pepper Spray” and will involve the same instructors who taught the self-defense class for sex workers that Hart initiated in Las Vegas in September.
“The last class was about six hours of great info, but it was all across-the-board personal protection info,” Hart told XBIZ. “After that, we decided that a specific class on just pepper spray would be the next best step.”
He notes pepper spray isn’t a “save-you-from-everything trick.”
“There are no such tricks. It takes years of dedicated martial arts training to be good at fighting off attackers,” he continued. “Guns are only great for very specific extreme threats, and they also take a lot of training. Pepper spray is super-affordable, easy to carry, the learning curve on getting effective is about two hours — thus, this two-hour class — and it greatly increases a victim's chance of getting home safely. Also, it doesn’t cause permanent damage and if someone makes a mistake, no one dies.”
The cost to Hart is about $7000 and covers the instructors' travel and accommodations and day rates, among other expenses.
“The trainers are specifically sex-work-friendly, badass at personal protection, not full of false info like many trainers (and) certified pepper spray trainers,” he said.
