LOS ANGELES — CalExotics recently took part in San Diego State University's (SDSU) "Free Vibrator Day" event, partnering with the school's student-run Womxn's Outreach Association (WOA) to distribute 500 vibrators to students and community members in the afternoon of November 21.
According to reps, CalExotics' resident sexologist, Dr. Jill McDevitt, and WOA, an intersectional feminist club at SDSU, coordinated the event with the goal being to destigmatize masturbation by promoting pleasure and body positivity.
The event reportedly attracted hundreds of people, while CalExotics was on hand to distribute the promised vibes.
CalExotics director of marketing, Nichole Grossmann, said of the event, "It was refreshing to hear pleasure-positive conversations going on about masturbation. It's such a huge topic that is not talked about enough or at all in sexual education. We hope that by working to normalize masturbation, we can help create more open and honest conversations."
Dr. McDevitt similarly followed up, offering their perspective on the importance of things like Free Vibrator Day. "I'm working to change the way that we think about and treat sexuality," they said. "My goal is to remove any stigma or shame around sex and sexuality and promote compassion to help people lead sexually fulfilled and pleasurable lives. 'Free Vibrator Day' is a way for us to celebrate pleasure and sexuality in a fun, safe and educational environment."
Dr. McDevitt also promoted the event during her segment with CBS 8 San Diego, where they discussed how to "shamelessly celebrate sexuality," including pointers on practicing body positivity, talking about sex and exploring your own body.
“I strongly believe that sexual pleasure is something to be celebrated," she reiterated, "and it is my mission to help spread that message."
