Good Vibrations, Babeland Survey Yields Insights Into Self-Pleasure

SAN FRANCISCO — For "Masturbation Month" in May, Good Vibrations and Babeland joined forces to conduct a survey to see where masturbation stands today, in the time of COVID-19 and self-quarantine.

Good Vibrations staff launched National Masturbation Month in May 1995; and this year marked the annual celebration by working with Babeland to survey customers and social media followers, resulting in their largest-ever collection of relevant data, the company said.

In all, 1760 people responded to the survey, sharing information about their experience with self-pleasure, beginning with respondents revealing how often they masturbate. The majority of respondents (46 percent) said that they self-pleasure a few times a week, followed by 16 percent that said they masturbate daily. Thirteen percent said that they masturbate a few times a month.

Respondents also were surveyed on how their habits have changed during the pandemic, including changes in how they become aroused, and the amount of time spent on masturbation sessions.

“As these respondent’s replies indicate, there is no right or wrong way to engage in solo sex, or prescribed number of minutes one should take to do it,” says Good Vibrations Staff Sexologist Carol Queen PhD, who used her background in sociology to analyze the survey results. (Good Vibes Education Director Andy Duran developed the survey.)

“These thoughtful responses offer a snapshot of the variety associated with self-love in the time of coronavirus,” Queen said. “And as the New York City Department of Health reminds us, one excellent way to stay safe is by staying home and masturbating.”
