Sexual Essentials' Samia Burton Offers Advice on Postpartum Sex

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Sexpert Samia Burton recently shared her advice to people struggling to have sex after giving birth.

“It’s no secret that loss of libido, discomfort and pain after having a child is perfectly normal, but it is possible to get back into the swing of things with your partner with a few well-placed tips,” Burton explained. “Every woman is different, many will be ready to get back into action after a couple of months, and some just won’t.”

“Even though you may not feel sexual, you should take the time to masturbate to help your body get used to working the orgasmic muscles again — and mostly likely, your orgasms will be weaker at first. More orgasms will be needed to get the body back to the wetness that you may be used to,” Burton continued.

Burton advised postpartum parents to “put yourself on an ‘orgasm schedule’ similar to working out, which can help keep you accountable; orgasms are like a muscle, and sometimes you have to re-strengthen them. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t feel aroused at first while you’re masturbating. Do it anyway because your body has to get familiar again.”

Additionally, people should know that anxiety, body changes, fatigue, stitches, bleeding and vaginal dryness can also contribute to the delay of sexual intimacy, and it is normal to need to talk to one's partner and doctor about these issues.
