LOS ANGELES — Mel Magazine this week published a guide to “The Best Little Butt Plugs for Bashful Beginners.”
The guide was penned by sexpert Kate Sloan, author of “101 Kinky Things Even You Can Do,” “200 Words to Help You Talk About Sexuality & Gender” and co-host of the podcasts “The Dildorks” and “Question Box.”
“As a one-time sex toy retail worker,” Sloan revealed, “I often noticed that when customers came into my store looking shifty-eyed and incapable of expressing what they actually wanted to buy, they were usually looking for a butt plug. Sometimes, I’d lead them to the butt plug section unprompted, just to watch sweet relief bloom on their face as I showed them what they had wanted all along.”
Sloan explained that “it makes sense that so many people are skittish about trying anal play. It’s still hugely taboo and shrouded in misconceptions — like that it 'makes you gay' (nope), has to hurt (nope) or will automatically be messy (not necessarily). Given how intimidating anal penetration can be, both physically and psychologically, it’s usually best to start with something small like a finger or a beginner-friendly butt plug.”
Besides encouraging the use of plentiful lube, Sloan also recommends going “slower than you think you need to” and trying anal play when folks are “already turned on when it begins.”
Sloan suggests that beginners choose a small-size toy at first, with a tapered tip and a flared base, and opt for a nonporous material like silicone, ABS plastic, glass, metal or lacquered wood.
As for specific brands and models, Sloan favors the Fun Factory Booty — her choice for best overall plug for newbies — as well as the Lovense Hush 2, the Njoy Pure Plug Medium, the Aneros Progasm Jr., the b-Vibe Snug Plug 1, the b-Vibe Rimming Plug Petite and Doc Johnson’s Mood Naughty 1 trainer set.
