NEW YORK — Eric Wexler, an industry veteran of over 40 years and owner of Best Kept Secret in Queens, New York, passed away on June 11 at the age of 74.
Sales exec Scott Lipkin shared the news of Wexler's passing on pleasure industry Facebook Group P3, describing him as "legendary" and an "extraordinary and ambitious individual," who was dedicated to staying on top of trends and keeping customers informed with signage he would create himself.
“He was a person who enjoyed trying out different products in his stores and was inspired by new technology," Lipkin told XBIZ. "He was hip to social media and always trying to keep up with all the changes."
From offering early support to brands others passed over to experimenting with emerging tech and smoke products before they hit the mainstream, Lipkin credits Wexler for having an instinct for staying ahead of the curve.
"I fondly refer to Eric as the 'loveable bear," Lipkin added. "He was tough as nails and always spoke his mind, whether it was good or bad. If Eric didn't like something, you had better listen or try to fix the issue. On the flip side, when Eric loved something, he would express his admiration for your product or idea with the same passion."
Wexler was the kind of owner who still worked shifts behind the counter — logging more than 25 hours a week — so he could personally help customers and ensure everyone left the store feeling seen, satisfied and valued. Whether patrons spent $5 or $50, Wexler wanted them to walk out with a smile, Lipkin said.
His passion for people extended well beyond sales. Lipkin said that he spoke to Wexler frequently, who would call him to check in on him.
"Eric, we will miss your phone calls and our visits to the store with you," Lipkin said. "Your love for the industry was unmatched, and you were a true pioneer and a kind, special friend. Rest in peace, good buddy. Thank you for being you."
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 22, at Schwartz Bros. Memorial Chapel, located at 114-03 Queens Blvd. in Forest Hill, N.Y., at 11:30 a.m.
