Chilean Porn Star Runs for Parliament

SANTIAGO - Maritza Gáez Arismendi, better known as Reichell, a leading porn star in Chile's adult film industry, is running for election to Chile's lower house of parliament in the upcoming federal elections, to be held this coming December.

A member of the liberal Social Democratic Radical Party (PRSD), which along with the Christian Democratic Party, the Socialist Party and the Party for Democracy, is an active part of the coalition that governs Chile under socialist President Ricardo Lagos, Reichell was one of the first actresses to enter Chile's legitimate adult film market under the tutelage of boyfriend and director Leonardo Barrera, after the industry was legalized in 2001.

"I could really identify with the party's radical stance in the struggle to legalize divorce," said Reichell. "Another issue that really concerns me is discrimination, because it's something that I've experienced in my own daily life, from my family and society."

The mother of an 8-year-old daughter, Reichell was raised by a family of farmers from Frutillar, a community south of Santiago, where she dreamed of someday being a porn star.

"I love being the center of attention," she said. "Who doesn't like to feel desired?"
