Blu-ray Discs Outselling HD-DVD in U.S.

LOS ANGELES — Consumers bought twice as many Blu-ray movie discs as HD-DVD in the U.S. in the first half of 2007, according to Home Media Research, a division of Home Media Magazine.

The company said total sales of Blu-ray discs totaled 1.6 million units from Jan. 1 through July 1, compared with 795,000 HD-DVD discs sold in the same time. An estimated 3.7 million high-definition discs have been sold since both formats were launched in 2006, including 2.2 million in Blu-ray and 1.5 million in HD-DVD through the end of July, according to Home Media.

The Japanese adult industry has adopted the Blu-ray format as well. In the U.S. adult industry, Vivid Entertainment and LFP Video have released Blu-ray discs.

A Home Media spokeswoman said Blu-ray got a further boost in August from strong Blu-ray sales of Warner Bros' "300." A Warner Home Video spokesman reported sales of about 190,000 Blu-ray units of the film, versus 97,000 in HD-DVD, since July 31.

Mainstream video rental chain Blockbuster, saying Blu-ray rentals were "significantly outpacing" HD-DVD rentals, has announced plans to put Blu-ray discs in 1,700 stores worldwide.

As for HD-DVD and the adult industry, Zero Tolerance has announced plans to release a HD-DVD disc.
