VSDA Show Focuses on Piracy, Market Share

LAS VEGAS—The annual Video Software Dealers’ Association Expo will address piracy and the market footprint of the $22-billion industry as it opens its 24th show today at Las Vegas’ Bellagio Hotel.

It is estimated that the entertainment industry, including adult, lost more than $13 billion in 2003 due to piracy, which included illegal offline copying as well as upwards of 400,000 illegal downloads a day.

Despite this, the $16 billion net from DVD sales represented a 40 percent increase over the previous year.

Various sources within the adult industry place total market between $7 billion and $14 billion, with a considerable amount of debate over numbers, due to their inflation by some companies that have control over creation, marketing, distribution and sales of products.

Established by 24 video retailers in 1981, the VSDA has grown to include 2,600 members, many of whom are in the adult industry. The Bellagio will be sectioned off according to adult/nonadult status.

Making booth appearances for various companies will be Carmen Luvana for Adam & Eve and Sara Stone for Colossal.

The convention, produced by Home Entertainment Events -- which also produces the Adult Entertainment Expo -- will feature appearances by Tony Orlando & Dawn, Peter Reigert and Craig Shoemaker, with market seminars ranging from anime to horror to Latino. Vin Diesel will receive the Male Star of the Year Award.

The convention continues until July 28.
