New Frontier Media Plans IPTV Service

BOULDER, Colo. — New Frontier Media has ambitious plans to launch an Interactive protocol TV service in the U.S., a move that could help catapult the brand past cable and satellite sales and move its product straight to consumers.

New Frontier disclosed in a regulatory filing Friday that it acquired numerous intellectual property rights in January to an IPTV set-top box that it plans to market next year. The service would be provided through a monthly subscription.

Through an IPTV set-top box, consumers can access content through the Internet and view the content on TVs.

New Frontier CEO Michael Weiner did not return XBIZ phone calls to elaborate on the plan, but so far the company has invested $500,000 on the IPTV set-top box initiative.

The company also has been testing an IPTV set-top box in the U.K., which Weiner said was continuing “on schedule and on budget” in a conference call to investors on Friday.

“Beta test customers are already online, and preliminary test marketing communications have begun,” he said.

New Frontier’s The Erotic Network operates six pay-per-view channels via cable and satellite in the U.S. Its channels include Blox, Blue, Clips, Juicy, Real, Xtxy and Penthouse TV.

The Boulder, Colo.-based company recently signed cable deals in Germany, France, Canada and Mexico.

New Frontier also disclosed it would launch a new version of its primary consumer website next year that will provide surfers the opportunity to participate in a virtual website community.
