The piece is titled “Sex Sells,” and chronicles the goings-on of the upstart company. Specifically, the article looks into Demon Seed and the adult industry in Florida.
According to a recent XBIZ News Report , one county in the state is even trying to ban the sale pornography within its limits.
But Deanna Morey, who wrote the piece in Orlando Weekly, believes Florida possesses a number of attributes that make it an attractive place for upstart pornographers that don’t necessarily want to move to the San Fernando Valley.
“Florida is perfectly positioned to take advantage of this shift in the adult entertainment biz. Operating costs are cheaper here than in California, especially for the plethora of porn companies that operate exclusively or mostly online,” Morey wrote. “And it may actually be safer, from a legal standpoint, to distribute porn on the Internet because companies aren’t using the U.S. Postal Service to move their product.”
DemonSeed President and founder Rob Bryant started DemonSeedPictures in March and plans to officially launch the DemonSeedPictures site on Sept. 1. Bryant plans on bringing DemonSeed to the Los Angeles area to open up a studio at some point in the near future, but said that for now the company’s location in Florida affords a number of benefits.
“We have an untapped talent pool out here,” Bryant told XBIZ. “There are girls here that want to get into the industry but don’t want to go to California. Some of our best girls are native to Florida.”
Bryant said that DemonSeed even has two signed contract girls, known as the Demon Dolls, Tasha Contradiction and Leihla Leionni. Both can be found on the site’s current beta version.
The Jacksonville Times-Union ranks Florida at No. 2 in the amount of online porn created nationwide and fourth in the number of consumers uploading and viewing adult content on XTube.com. A 2006 state-by-state breakdown of U.S. sex enthusiasts by AdultFriendFinder places Florida third in porn-viewing habits, with 4.1 percent of the state’s population admitting to viewing porn, ahead of California, where 3.3 percent of the population watches porn, according to the survey.
Demon Seed photographer Leon Bryan, who performs under the name Leon Derriere, told Orlando Weekly that the porn scene in Florida is a little different than the one in California.
“It’s a different crowd here with amateurs and people trying to get into the business,” Bryan said in the article. “There’s definitely that amateur factor in Florida.”
DemonSeed believes another element that will lead to their success is their unique variety of fetish.
“We have girls who perform with stuffed teddy bears,” Bryant said. “We’re doing specific fetish things that are particular to us and we’re hoping to carve a niche. We would love for Demon Seed to be synonymous with ‘Cuddlez the bad-ass bear.’”
Bryant — who currently moonlights as a radio producer for a number of stations in the Orlando area — said that his ultimate goal for Demon Seed is to open a studio and produce adult films, but right now he is focusing on the launch of the website.
“Be prepared to be wowed,” Bryant said. “Our site is high-production and high-quality. We shoot exclusively in HD. We have forums, blogs, podcasts, we’re working on an iPhone formatted website and we’re looking at launching an application for the iPhone.”
The Orlando Weekly article appears to be providing nothing but positive attention for Demon Seed.
“Our site has been blowing up in just the past day or so since the article came out,” Bryant said. “Which is good because we’re trying to put Orlando on the map.”
