China Steps Up War on Porn

BEIJING — Stepping up its crackdown on adult material, China is launching yet another new war on porn distribution.

China Daily reported that the country’s National Office Against Pornographic and Illegal Publications said today that the national campaign will last from mid-July to the end of November and will target vendors selling videos, books and magazines, as well as “various forms of pornographic or vulgar online content.”

Also in the country’s cross hairs are books that promote gang-related culture and songs that feature obscene content.

According to government officials, a new surge in online porn along with more brick and mortar porn distribution prompted the crackdown.

Last March, officials shuttered 225 microblog accounts and punished 154 website operators for distributing obscene content.

As it’s done in the past, officials are providing whistle-blowing methods for the public and are offering “rewards” to porn snitches.

In its last attampt to recruit the public, the country was offering a cash bounty to its citizens. More than 2,000 Chinese received part of $1.47 million that was doled out by four tip-off organizations, including the China Internet Illegal Information Reporting Center.
