China Continues Porn Crackdown: Shutters Sites, Blogs

BEIJING  — Continuing its war on porn, China has shut down 225 websites and more than 30,000 blogs and Twitter-like microblogs.

The latest salvo launched against adult by the Communist government was aimed at porn, video sharing and online gaming sites that it claimed is offering “obscene or improper content.”

A statement from the State Internet Information Office said it was working with police and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology to investigate those running the sites and how they got online.

Just last February authorities shuttered more than 60 websites, blogs and microblog accounts.  And last September, about 97,000 blogs and microblog accounts in a seven-month long campaign were closed and accused of circulating “lewd” content.

The ever-growing crackdown is fueled mostly by whistle-blowing citizens who support the government’s anti-porn measures.
