iPhone Presents Problems, Solutions for Video Delivery

CYBERSPACE — Apple's iPhone is one of the hottest new toys to hit the market in years, but delivering video on the device remains tricky.

Most standard video formats won't work on the iPhone because the device only supports videos encoded in what is called H.264. This format is able to shrink videos down to far more manageable sizes, a quality that makes it very attractive to the iPhone.

But because H.264 is pretty much the only format that works on the iPhone, adult industry professionals are faced with challenges when trying to deliver video.

Converting videos to an iPhone-friendly format is fairly easy. AliveMedia.net offers conversion software, as do Xilisoft, Lenogo and many others. AfterDawn.com offers a tutorial for how to use Videora, a popular iPhone video converter.

Live streaming video has no formal support from Apple as of today. Two companies are competing to offer streaming video: FlixWagon.com and Qik.com.

Because of the lack of support from Apple, webmasters and adult industry professionals should proceed with caution when attempting to enable streaming video on their iPhones, because doing so typically requires some sort of hack.

Qik.com, for example, offer a tutorial for how to stream live videos on their company blog.
