Special Report: Custom Videos

With countless DVDs released each year and the increasing number of niches within, one would think that there would be something for everyone. But it is almost impossible to satisfy the vast market and its quirks through the Porn Valley system.

Porn on the Road

It’s no secret that some of America’s largest corporations profit directly from adult entertainment offerings, including those made through hotel pay-per-view services — despite ongoing public protests from various religious and special interest groups.

Now That's Obscene

The feds have indicted John Stagliano on obscenity charges, which is an act that takes a lot of chutzpah; and the movies they chose to indict him on are pretty vanilla in my book.

Knock it Off

Like the fake Louis Vuitton bags that litter Manhattan’s streets, rip-offs can be found in almost any industry. If it’s not a designer bag, it’s a watch or a designer shirt; the fact is, copying is an inherent part of business.

State-Level Prosecutions

During the George W. Bush era, federal obscenity prosecutions have been a major concern for the adult entertainment industry in the U.S. But federal prosecutors are not the only prosecutors who can charge adult entrepreneurs with obscenity; adult companies also need to be concerned about the possibility of obscenity prosecutions at the state level. State obscenity prosecutions have been a fact of life for American adult businesses during the industry’s best times and worst times.

Three Alternate Futures

As the Democratic Party wrestles with its knockdown, drag-out primary contest between Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. Hillary Clinton, desperately seeking unity, the adult industry is no doubt wrestling with its own concerns regarding how it will fare under the potential presidency of the three remaining major candidates. The voters’ choice of candidate in November will dramatically impact the way in which the adult industry will fare — potentially for many years to come. Therefore, an objective, informed evaluation of each candidate’s stance on erotic entertainment and First Amendment issues is critically important to determining the potential impacts on the industry.

Behind Every Video is One Guy's Hard-on

Just what is it that porn directors do, anyway? It could be fairly said about some directors that you still wouldn’t know what they do even if you spent a day on their sets. However, for the few good directors who create the bulk of high-quality, high-earning titles that come out of Porn Valley, the fair answer to the question of what they do is “everything.”

Prosecuting the Consumer

In recent decades, obscenity law in many major industrialized Western democracies has focused on creation, manufacturing and distribution rather than simple possession. Prosecutors in the U.S. and the U.K. — which are among the democracies where obscenity prosecution has been common — have been going after adult companies, adult stars and adult stores, but not adult entertainment fans. However, that may change in the U.K. if Parliament passes what is being called the “extreme porn” law, which would make it a felony (punishable by up to three years in prison) to possess what British politicians have been loosely describing as “extreme pornography” or “violent pornography.” And supporters of the proposed legislation have been saying that they hope other Western democracies — including the U.S. — will follow Britain’s example and pass possession- oriented “extreme porn” laws of their own.

With countless DVDs released each year and the increasing number of niches within, one would think that there would be something for everyone. But fetishes are like bellybuttons (and, for some, bellybuttons are the fetish), so it is almost impossible to satisfy the vast market and its quirks through the Porn Valley system as it stands.
