WIA Profile: Nan Kinney

What is your role and responsibility at Fatale Media?

We're a very small company. The business is just run by myself and my partner Christi so I am involved in pretty much everything from production to sales to paying bills. And, I like it that way. I guess I like being in control.

I love my work; it's such a big part of my life.

Describe a typical Monday at your desk.

You mean besides preparing for our weekly Monday afternoon all-dyke orgy? Kidding! If I have a typical Monday it would start by getting caught up on emails and phone calls. Then meeting with Christi and taking a look at what we have going for the week — status of new products, marketing efforts like our bi-monthly newsletter, any customer service issues or website additions and changes. We also set our goals or tasks for the week. I might spend the afternoon going over cash flow, meeting with a colleague, or watching a screener; it all depends on what's on the agenda.

What is the biggest challenge of being a woman in adult entertainment?

I'm not sure that being a woman is a challenge; I think it may be an advantage. We're a lesbian, indie-porn company. I work mostly with women, and some enlightened men. We're on the fringes of mainstram adult entertainment and our gender roles are less strictly defined. Perhaps being an out butch lesbian may threaten some guys in adult mainstream, but I honestly haven't felt any discrimination on that front.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

For me, doing what I like to do is most important. Working with some really amazing, incredible women is very rewarding. And, knowing that in the end, my business is giving people pleasure.

How do you maintain balance in your life?

I love my work; it's such a big part of my life. I don't really feel a separation from work and play. But, I do like to unwind and have a change of scene and some downtime. I get inspired hiking in the mountains around Santa Fe, New Mexico, or going to New York and seeing a Broadway play. Christi and I love to cook and have friends over to watch the New York Yankees. Life is good.
