Sony’s Cloud-Based Tablet S Offers New Horizons

Sony is challenging Apple for tablet dominance with a hi-tech Android offering that may reshape the way consumers view mobile multimedia offerings — including adult content. The new product, known as the Sony Tablet, currently comes in two distinct flavors, the Tablet S and the Tablet P, both of which seek to complement cloud-based network services for an immersive entertainment experience.

According to the company, its Tablet S device delivers rich media entertainment, while the Tablet P is ideal for mobile communications and entertainment.

Both devices are Wi-Fi and WAN (3G/4G) compatible, enabling users to browse the Internet, check e-mail, engage in social networking and receive smooth access to digital content including videos, games and books through Sony’s premium network services and other sources.

The Sony Tablet S features a 9.4-inch large-screen display and an off-center of gravity design that provides enhanced stability and ease of grip, for hours of lightweight, comfortable use. The device is also able to serve as a universal remote control for Sony AV devices and has the ability to “throw” personal content to large screen televisions or music to wireless speakers.

The Tablet P offers a pair of 5.5-inch displays that are foldable for greater portability.

“In contrast to existing tablets, its unprecedented dual screen presentation and usability allows its displays to be combined and used as a large screen or for different functions such as playing video on one screen while showing control buttons on the other,” states a company release, pointing the way to the future of mobile video presentations.

“Sony Tablet delivers an entertainment experience where users can enjoy cloudbased services on-the-go at any time,” Sony Executive Kunimasa Suzuki stated. “We’re aiming to create a new lifestyle by integrating consumer hardware, including ‘Sony Tablet’ with content and network.”

The Sony Tablet S runs the popular Android operating system, initially shipping with version 3.0 of the Open Source OS.

“Android 3.0 is a version of the Android platform with a new holographic user interface that is designed from the ground up for devices with larger screen sizes, particularly tablets,” Google Mobile SVP Andy Rubin stated. “I’m excited about ‘Sony Tablet’ as it will further spur the development of applications and network offerings which users are looking for.”

Recent reports reveal however that the company plans to upgrade the device to the latest version of the Android OS, v4.0, ushering in a wide range of significant enhancements to the already stellar device.
