For Casey Calvert, performing sex on screen was a career choice that came naturally. Fairly petite (5’5”) with dark hair and natural 34B breasts, her credits on IAFD.com number over 200. She’s 25 years old, comfortable in her skin — and bright. The personal blog on her website — CaseyCalvert.com — is smart, tart and often even thought-provoking. But it’s on camera that she really makes her mark. She throws herself into her work.
Last year, the X-Rated Critics Organization named her Unsung Siren of the Year, an award for performers who give their all month after month but often fall under the radar when it comes to widespread recognition. Except that Calvert has never been under the radar as far as her numerous fans are concerned.
Porn performers often get called ‘actors’ or ‘actresses.’ I think that is a bit of a misnomer. ‘Stunt person’ is a much more accurate phrase.
In three and a half years, she has shot for a wide range of adult studios and online sites, from couples-oriented lines (Sweet Sinner, Digital Sin) to hardcore gonzo (Evil Angel, HardX) to ultra-hardcore websites such as Kink.com. Her dedication earned her a Performer of the Year nomination in this year’s XBIZ Awards.
Hailing from Gainesville, Florida, she entered porn in mid-2012.
“I was working as a fetish model, graduated from college, very unsure about what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I knew I loved modeling and being in front of the camera, figured I was naked on the Internet already and decided to make the leap to adult. The biggest draw for me was being able to make a career and support myself financially through exploring my sexuality.”
She quickly became known for her zeal and expertise in two areas: anal sex and BDSM. Both specialties, she says, she was into “before I started shooting porn. I actually lost my anal virginity first, and I had never seen a hard penis in real life when I first got tied up. Anal and BDSM are things I’ve always been drawn to in my personal life, so it was super easy for me to carry them over into my career.”
She has a special relationship with Kink.com, the enormously popular BDSM network that has all too often been demonized by mainstream media.
“I’ve shot for all the straight sites on Kink.com at least once. These days you can find me most often bottoming for Device Bondage and Hogtied, and topping on Everything Butt. I love working for Kink.com. Yes, they have their internal problems, but I have never had an issue with them. They take beyond excellent care of us. I have never once felt unsafe or uncomfortable there.”
Calvert prides herself on having been named the official BDSM and fetish expert for GameLink. “I really love [it],” she says. “They approached me about six months ago, and I jumped at the chance. Among other things, I write a blog once a month for their site. It’s been a great platform for me to share some of the information I’ve learned over the years.”
Recently on her blog she asserted, “Porn is a full contact sport.” We asked her to elaborate on that.
“Porn performers often get called ‘actors’ or ‘actresses.’ I think that is a bit of a misnomer. ‘Stunt person’ is a much more accurate phrase. We aren’t actors pretending to be in love, pretending to be tied up, pretending to put huge things in our butts. We are stunt people actually doing those things. Porn is real in that way. And just like stunt people, we sometimes overexert ourselves, we sometimes get hurt. Just like on a big Hollywood set, no one wants injuries, but accidents happen. And those Hollywood stunt people know exactly what they signed up for when they clock in. So do we.”
That said, it’s a fact that she has made her mark as an actress as well as a performer. Not so much in high-end features, but definitely in couples-oriented vignette series from Sweet Sinner, New Sensations/Digital Sin, with directors like James Avalon, Dana Vespoli and Jacky St. James.
“One of the very few things left on my porn bucket list is starring in a big-budget feature. I love acting. I love carrying over my character into the sex. I very much want to do more.”
Her list of favorite directors is long and varied. For acting she loves working for Avalon, Vespoli, St. James and Wicked’s Stormy Daniels. “At Kink, JP the Pope, James Mogul and Ariel X are all amazing. For hard gonzo, Mike Adriano and Mason rule. I would love to work for Brad Armstrong for one of his big features one day. And I have to say, I have a soft spot for Eli Cross.”
Veteran director Avalon calls Calvert “an amazing, intelligent beauty who also just happens to have a healthy sexual appetite. It’s always a pleasure to work with her.”
Calvert in fact gets to direct herself, fairly frequently, via the custom videos she makes for fans through her website. “Custom videos is one of my favorite things to do… I love making personalized content, and I love helping my fans get exactly what they want to see — even, and especially, the weird stuff. I get ‘unusual’ requests all the time, but I won’t talk about those. I want to make sure my customers feel safe discussing what they want to see with me, without risk of getting made fun of.”
Would she like to direct for public consumption one day, even to the extent of having her own line? “If the right circumstance came along, I would love to.”
Calvert is glad to be one of the Spiegler Girls, under the astute guidance of Mark Spiegler, considered by many to be the premier agent for female porn talent. “Mark is amazing,” she says. “He works us hard, yes, but he cares for us like family. I wouldn’t be with any other agency.”
Along with colleagues such as Stoya, Asa Akira, jessica drake and Kayden Kross, she is always open to discussing the industry with mainstream media and participating in panels and discussion groups. Like many of today’s porn workers, she considers herself a feminist. “To me, feminism is a woman’s right to choose.”
Calvert chose porn as a vocation. But for how much longer, we asked? She is quick to reply. “I plan to keep performing as long as my body, and the business, let me.”
