Q&A With Mobius’ Sales Director Matt Mund

As director of sales at Mobius Payments, Matt Mund is tasked to generate new business and facilitate and create brand awareness for the payment processor.

But Mund also spends a fair amount of time communicating with his existing clients to ensure their needs are met and their businesses continue to grow.

Working for an entrepreneur like Mia Hyun, the chief executive and founder of Mobius Payments has been both a privilege and an invaluable education. When you work with people like her every day, it’s truly inspiring.

One of the key virtues of Mobius Payments, and one he leans on, is the company’s personal touch. “We pride ourselves on making sure our partners’ needs are met,” he said.

XBIZ recently sat down with Mund for this Q&A to find out more about his role at Mobius Payments and how he’s been able to help steer sales in one of the most competitive sectors of the online adult space.

XBIZ: What are some of the most valuable lessons you have learned about adult billing?

Mund: One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is that more isn’t always better. As merchants are starting out, they look to diversify their risk and enhance their revenue stream by adding accounts with every processor in the industry; that can be overkill. Merchants can better serve their business by working with one or two processors that can help them reach their goals with a more strategic focus.

XBIZ: What are some of the biggest challenges that you face in a typical week?

Mund: Given that my primary role at Mobius Payments is in sales, the biggest challenge I face is the impending, diminutive, monstrous word “no.” As much as I know inherently, Mobius Payments is a premier processing solution and can benefit those I talk to, for various reasons every salesman hears a “no” from time to time; I don’t think anyone likes to hear that.

Even worse than hearing “no” is saying “no.” Sometimes merchants see the benefit of working with us, yet are tied into a contract and their volume doesn’t make it a smart decision to add additional billers at that moment. I have to do the right thing and do what is in the best interest of their business and advise against it. I know in doing this, a time will come when it is right for their business, and I will be there to help them again.

XBIZ: Adult billing is a field with a lot of competition. What are some of the things that make Mobius Payments stand out in such a competitive field?

Mund: The things that set Mobius Payments apart in such a competitive industry are our extensive merchant banking relationships, chargeback management system and customer service.

Mobius Payments has over 80 years of combined banking experience for our customers to capitalize on. This brings us many direct relationships with banks which in turn provide our customers more solutions with exceptional service. Our chargeback management system is proven to lower our customer’s chargeback counts.

We pride ourselves on making sure our partners’ needs are met. Instead of providing cookie-cutter processing solutions, we take the time to get to know our customers’ business and help them strategize to develop scalable solutions. On top of being knowledgeable and smart, we love what we do and we are a fun group (even if I’m the only one rocking a speedo around the office).

XBIZ: In what ways do you see Mobius Payments evolving in coming years?

Mund: Growing our chargeback management program is on the horizon; our program is proven to lower a merchant’s fraud and chargeback count. Also, our customer-focused strategy continues to be key for us. Because of these things we have seen exponential growth, and so have our customers year after year. In the coming years, I expect the same.

Keeping our customers as the No. 1 priority and adding in new technology solutions to our Mobius gateway this will help us facilitate more businesses to grow and be confident with Mobius Payments as their payment processor.

XBIZ: What are some of the things that make the adult billing field exciting for you?

Mund: Working in an industry with so many tech-savvy business owners and helping them monetize their creative business models is pretty exciting. More than that, I sincerely get excited about helping merchants. If it’s helping educate them, or helping them save and make more money, I’ll do what I can. Helping ensure they are doing what’s best for their business when it comes to processing is immensely rewarding.

XBIZ: Who inspires you in business?

Mund: As much as one could say Elon Musk or Oprah for all the great things they have done, the reality is, it’s the team of people I work with on a daily basis who go above and beyond to help our partners stay successful.

Working for an entrepreneur like Mia Zhu, the chief executive and founder of Mobius Payments has been both a privilege and an invaluable education. When you work with people like her every day, it’s truly inspiring.

XBIZ: When not thinking about the biz, what do you like to do?

Mund: Music is my life. Whether I’m DJ-ing, listening to a new mix or attending a show, music is always around me. I’m also restoring a farmhouse built in 1907, so keeping the roof from literally falling in on me has been a top priority.

How to Halt Hackers as Fraud Attacks Rise

For hackers, it’s often a game of trial and error. Bad actors will perform enumeration and account testing, repeating the same test on a system to look for vulnerabilities — and if you are not equipped with the proper tools, your merchant account could be the next target.
