The Pros and Cons of Cosmetic Surgery

The Pros and Cons of Cosmetic Surgery

You don’t have to be a model to grapple with the fact that we live in an image-conscious society. Greater beauty typically equals a greater advantage, even when a person’s body is not their livelihood. However, if you actually do make your living as a model, then the pressure to look like everyone’s “fantasy come to life” is exponential compared to the body image struggles of most “civilians.”

If you browse your social media feeds, you’ll invariably see posts full of surgically enhanced bodies and “transformation stories” that make you look in the mirror and wonder. If that isn’t enough to make your thoughts race, there are also plenty of horror stories online about cosmetic surgery and procedures gone wrong. The risks and benefits of plastic surgery have never looked so obvious to models, even as we might remain ambivalent — or jealous of those who attained their body goals.

The healing process itself can vary depending on the person and operation, but you need to consider that you will be unable to work for several days, possibly weeks.

Due to the lockdowns of 2020, many people turned to online sex work, which has in turn caused many platforms to become oversaturated with models. With so much more competition, the pressure to make our bodies, our “work tools,” totally perfect has never been so intense.

I will be honest: I had some work done myself. This past year, I decided to get rid of some extra “Corona fat” and reshape my body. Sounds like a win, right? However: I was unable to work for six weeks following surgery. Besides having to miss work, let’s just say recovery is no walk in the park.

So, is plastic surgery really the golden solution to all our body image issues? Is it really worth it for models? If you’re on the fence, I’ve made a list of pros and cons to help you decide what is best for you.

CONS TO CONSIDER

• Every surgery/procedure poses real risk. Models often overlook this, as we are so focused on the results that we don’t always take into consideration our overall health prior to booking a procedure.

• Surgery requires a lot of aftercare! What may look like a quick fix in the “before and after” pictures actually requires time and care. Really, surgery is only the beginning of your journey towards a new body. The healing process itself can vary depending on the person and operation, but you need to consider that you will be unable to work for several days, possibly weeks, before your body is ready to go back to normal.

• The outcome of your surgery may be different than expected. Every body is different, and someone else’s results may give us unrealistic and unachievable expectations.

• Plastic surgery is expensive, and there is a reason for that! Top surgeons often charge top money — and you should never, ever compromise your health for the lower price of a “bargain” when it comes to plastic surgery.

• Yes, it hurts! Even with painkillers, every surgery means enduring a certain level of pain and discomfort. Some procedures are more complicated than others and every person has a different pain threshold — but ultimately, every intervention in your body is painful.

• Plastic surgery requires maintenance. Those new boobs will require replacement in time. Also, if you experience weight fluctuations, pregnancy or other changes in your body, you might need additional surgery in time.

• Plastic surgery can actually become addictive for some people.

NOW FOR THE PROS!

• Plastic surgery is often life-changing in terms of eliminating those stubborn “imperfections” and building your confidence.

• Your new “upgraded” look can help to attract a much bigger number of new clients, or open other doors. Obviously, this is the major incentive for models; however, if you are considering plastic surgery to please someone else, don’t! Do this only for you.

• Enjoying your appearance more can lead to better mental health. If you love what you see in the mirror every day, the positive vibes keep building.

• Plastic surgery can be a huge jump-start or incentive towards a healthier routine, diet and lifestyle.

It goes without saying that the decision to have plastic surgery is extremely personal, and not to be taken lightly. You want to make sure that you are aware of all possible consequences or side effects. It’s also always a good idea to check out non-invasive options to achieve your desired looks.

Remember: Plastic surgery is a tool, but is not in itself a singular solution to your insecurities. The journey towards greater self-confidence and self-love is more than “skin deep” — even for models!

Understanding 'Indemnification' in Business Contracts

Clients frequently tell me that they didn’t understand — or sometimes, even read — certain portions of a contract because those sections appeared to be just “standard legalese.” They are referring, of course, to the specialized language used in legal documents, including contracts.
